Excessive Feet Swelling and Smelly Feet – Legacy Foot & Ankle Specialists

May 2, 2016 Blog 0

There are 250,000 sweat glands in our feet. And we can excrete as much as half a pint of moisture in a day. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition described as excessive sweating. This can cause discomfort especially if it causes excessive foot perspiration.

Sweaty Feet

People who have sweaty feet can also suffer from sweaty palms and armpits. The exact causes of excessive sweating is unknown but it can be traced to overactive sweat glands. People with a family history of heavy sweating also have a higher tendency for suffering from the same condition.

Sweat can be a physical or physiological response. The body uses sweat glands for cooling down the body or an unconscious response to stress.  However, when this becomes excessive even without any physical or psychological triggers, a person can be suffering from excessive sweating which may require treatment.

Sweaty feet can cause athlete’s foot or blisters. Consult a podiatrist if you suspect that you have excessive feet swelling. Our Doctor is a podiatrist who specializes in helping people suffering from all types of foot disorders.

Possible Candidates

People in their 20’s and adolescents usually have overactive sweat glands. This is mainly due to physical and hormonal changes being experienced in this age group. Sweat glands can be triggered by stress and strong emotions. This can also be the reason why smell feet is a common complain among teenagers.

Living with Sweaty Feet

Practicing foot care and maintaining proper hygiene helps stop smelly feet. It can also prevent fungal infections such as those seen in Athlete’s foot. Accumulated moisture especially in areas between the toes are perfect breeding ground for infection.

Preventing smelly feet can be done by simply washing your feet with anti-bacterial soap. Using absorbent foot powder and using creams can help stop the growth of fungi and bacteria. Alternating your shoes and regularly changing your socks are simple ways of keeping foul odors at bay. Also consider wearing shoes which lets your feet breathe.

Medical Treatments

Medical treatments may be required when conservative treatments do not help you get rid of smelly feet because of excessive sweating. Treatments can include electric stimulation and Botox injections to minimize sweating.

Consult a podiatrist about all possible treatments available for sweaty feet and its complications. At Legacy Foot & Ankle Specialists with office located in Frisco, TX, we specialize in helping people suffering with a talus fracture.  To schedule an appointment call 214-705-9255.

A swollen ankle is a common symptom found in many foot disorders and injuries.  This is why it is often shrugged off or ignored as something that can be treated quickly. However, swollen ankles should still receive the necessary treatment required to heal properly.

Consult a podiatrist if swelling persists or worsens. Our Doctor is a podiatrist who specializes in helping people with foot disorders and injuries.

Causes of swollen ankle includes but not limited to:

  • Pregnancy
  • Drugs taken
  • Injuries and trauma to lower extremities
  • Dependent swelling
  • Diseases such as liver failure, congestive heart failure, kidney problems, and many others.
  • Lymphedema
  • Infections

The symptoms of swelling may depend on the primary cause of the swollen ankle. Common signs and symptoms may include:

  • Color change of the skin
  • Changes in texture in the ankle
  • Painless increase in foot and ankle size

  • Ulceration with pus drainage

A swollen ankle is clinically and medically diagnosed through clinical assessment, observation and conducting a physical exam. Other tests are also added to diagnose what the underlying cause is all about if not yet known.

Treatments for a swollen ankle are usually a part of the treatment for swollen feet. Treatments usually depend on the underlying cause and reasons. Most often, people with a swollen ankle require no treatment. While some of the others whose swollen ankle came from a different underlying cause, may require a different treatment. Most often, these treatments are for the underlying cause to be treated and not for the swollen ankle.

Complications are very rare but it can range from no complications at all to as simple as skin ulcerations which can result to infection or worse if left untreated.
